Bradyn Watson turned two quick starts into quick finishes Tuesday.

Watson won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke in helping the Brainerd Warriors win the Brainerd Invite at the Brainerd High School pool.

The Warriors also received firsts from Britton Murrey in diving, Tyler Schneider in the 500 freestyle and Josh McKeag in the 100 backstroke to top second-place Monticello by 90 points.

“It was a well-rounded effort,” said Warriors head coach John Zemke. “We were kind of hit and miss today. We had some guys drop some time, but a lot of us are kind of maintaining the times we’ve already had this year. We’re training hard. We were hit and miss, but we’ll keep practicing and see what happens.”

Watson hit on both of his starts to pull away early. He was then able to maintain the lead on his way to his two firsts. He won the IM in 2:14.39 and the breaststroke in 57.26. Both of those were season best times. He also helped the 200 medley relay to second and the 200 free relay to third.

“I felt like it was going to be a close race going in, but I pulled away off the bat and I used that to pull away during the rest of the race and it worked out,” said Watson. “The breaststroke was kind of the same. I got out right away and just used it to pull out the win.”

Murrey dove to a season-best, six-dive score of 238.6 for his victory. Schneider covered the 500 in 5:28.31 to better his seed time and was second in the 200 free. McKeag won the backstroke in 1:00.58. He also scored a second in the butterfly.

Nick Goll got the time drop award as he erased 15 seconds from his 500 free seed time to finish fifth with a 5:39.93.

Sam Dellacecca scored a second in the 100 freestyle for the Warriors in the six-team invite.

“It’s definitely a different perspective,” said Watson. “You prepare differently because in a dual meet you aren’t necessarily swimming next to the fastest guy. In an invite ,with everything seeded, you’re always going to be next to a fast guy or a guy that’s going to be close to you. In terms of being mentally prepared, you have to go in knowing you’ll be racing somebody from start to finish.”

Zemke called the invite a nice change during the usual training over Christmas break.

“It’s nice to have six teams up here,” Zemke added. “It was nice to see Monticello again and Moorhead is back this year after a couple years away. We also get to see some good 1A teams.”
