JAMESTOWN, N.D. — University of Jamestown women's volleyball postponed its first five matches of the 2020 season Thursday, Sept. 3, due to a COVID-19 outbreak affecting the team.

"There are cases of COVID on our campus and we have specific protocols and practices that we have in place," Jamestown Athletic Director Sean Johnson said. "If we run into a situation where we think that we should not hold an event out of an abundance of caution we're gonna do that.

"There are cases on the volleyball team."

"We have cases on campus, we have cases in the community. We've just gotta be careful," Johnson said. "It does not affect our other sports right now. The No. 1 thing is the safety of our student-athletes, our campus and the community."

Jimmie women's volleyball ended 2019 ranked fourth in the NAIA postseason coaches' poll, after winning a program-record 33 matches and becoming Jamestown's first sports team to reach an NAIA national championship semifinal. Jamestown now is scheduled to open the season Sept. 18 at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Jimmies hosted an intrasquad scrimmage open to the public on Aug. 27 at Newman Arena. Spectators were required to wear masks.

Makeup dates for the five postponed matches are not yet scheduled.

"We're not canceling the season, we're just not playing the next two weekends," Johnson said. "We anticipate that we will play Sept. 18 and 19 when we go to Dordt and Briar Cliff."
