THUNDER BAY, Ontario - The Brainerd Lake Area Lunkers pounded out 14 hits, including three long balls, to defeat the Thunder Bay Border Cats 14-3 Sunday in front of 1,128 fans at Port Arthur Stadium.
The Border Cats jumped out early after a leadoff triple and an RBI single, but the advantage was short lived.
In the second inning, Nate Hammes (St. Cloud State) started the six-run inning with his two-run single to right, and Shon Roe (Loyola Marymount) followed with an RBI single to left. T.J. Berge's (Northern Colorado) capped off the inning with a three-run jack over the right field fence.
The Lunkers allowed a single run in the bottom of the second and another in the fifth, but that's as close as the Border Cats would get.
Berge extended the lead to 7-4 with a solo homer in the seventh, and the Lunkers brought seven more men home in the eighth as they batted around.
The Lunkers return to Port Arthur Stadium Monday for the regular-season finale against the Border Cats. First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
Saturday: Lunkers fall
Michael Gedman kept the Lunkers close, but the lefty allowed a five-run ninth to the Alexandria Beetles in a 5-0 loss Saturday.
Beetles ace Mitch Handley handcuffed the Brainerd hitters to notch a complete game shutout while tallying five strikeouts. Brainerd managed just three hits.
For eight innings Gedman more than matched Handley's effort pitch for pitch, tossing 6 2/3 no-hit innings and continued to put zeros on the board through the eighth.
In the ninth, Alexandria figured out Gedman stringing together five hits including a two-run double by Tim Roberson that broke the tie and chased the Lunker starter.
