MANKATO, Minn. — Former Minnesota State University-Mankato defenseman Edwin Hookenson has signed a pro contract to play for the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL. The Grizzlies are a minor league affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.

Hookenson had three goals, 13 points, 23 penalty minutes, led the team with 50 blocked shots and was a plus-19 in 38 games last season. In his college career, he had eight goals, 31 points, 205 blocked shots and was a plus-45 in 124 games. As a junior, he led NCAA Division I in blocked shots with 97.

Hookenson, who is from Lampman, Saskatchewan, was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and was the 2019-20 WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year.

He was named to a WCHA Scholar-Athlete three times and graduated with degrees in finance and accounting a 3.97 grade-point average. The Mavericks won three WCHA regular season titles, one WCHA playoff title and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Before playing for the Mavericks, Hookenson played junior hockey for three seasons for the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League.
