The Jacksonville Jaguars hired former San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke as director of player personnel on Tuesday.

"I have known Trent for two decades, and he'll be a valuable addition to our personnel department," general manager Dave Caldwell said in a statement. "He had a lot of success during his time in San Francisco and has proven that he has a great eye for talent and constructing a team, so we're excited for him to be a part of the organization.

"... We expect him to get involved immediately as we make decisions on our current roster and approach free agency."

Baalke, who turns 56 on Feb. 14, spent the last two-plus years as a consultant in the league office, after being fired by the 49ers following the 2016 season. Baalke is a former Fargo Shanley High School athletic director.

Baalke took over as San Francisco's GM in 2011, and the team promptly went to three straight NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl, losing to the Baltimore Ravens following the 2012 season. The Niners were 36-11-1 through those three seasons before slipping to 8-8, 5-11 and then 2-14 in Baalke's final season.
