The Detroit Lakes Lakers had too many hits and runs in their lineup Tuesday for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines to handle.

Playing the first home games of the 2013 season after a month of frustration with uncharacteristically wintery conditions, the Wolverines dropped a 13-3 decision in Game 1 and lost 11-6 in Game 2.

The Lakers pounded out 27 hits in beating Caitlin Volkmann in the opener and Victoria Witthuhn in the nightcap.

Sadie Larson homered, drove in five runs, scored twice and hit safely four of five times in the first game for Detroit Lakes. Katelyn Kinney scored twice and drove in three runs for the Lakers. Liecenia Burnside, Carolyn Kinney and Hannah Ianiro combined for six hits, four runs and three RBIs in the victory.

Sam Killian tripled and drove in two of WDC’s three runs in the first inning.

Detroit Lakes’ Chaz Butz pitched six straight scoreless innings after the first. Butz walked four, fanned four and scattered five hits.

Volkmann only gave up five earned runs in the loss. The Wolverines were guilty of four errors.

Butz threw shutout ball in five of her seven innings as the Lakers completed the sweep.

Emily Seebold led the Lakers at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Carolyn Kinney went 4-for-4 in the victory. Kathryn Kinney scored three times.

Volkmann went 2-for-4 and scored twice in the loss. Michaela Lehmkuhl picked up a pair of RBIs.

Bailee Jerger pitched 10 innings in gaining two fastpitch victories as the Panthers swept the Wolverines.

Jerger walked nine, surrendered five hits and fanned four as she went the distance in both five-inning games. Jerger held the Wolverines to just a pair of hits in Game 1.

WDC’s lone run came in the fourth when Michaela Lehmkuhl singled and later scored on Sam Manselle’s grounder

The Panthers led the second game 5-0 when Sam Killian slugged a three-run homer for WDC. Nakkita Buckanaga jacked a three-run blast in the bottom of the third to put the Panthers up 9-3.

Victoria Witthuhn went the first three frames of Game 2 for the Wolverines. Volkmann pitched one inning of relief.
