YANKTON -- The Mitchell boys' track and field team came close to breaking another school record in the relays Thursday at the First Dakota Relays in Yankton.
The 400-meter relay team of Blake Guymon, Jason Greenway, Tyler Volesky and Justin Greenway won their race in a time of 44.2 seconds, which was just two-tenths of a second off the MHS record.
"That was a fun relay and I was very happy with the way they ran," Mitchell coach Geoff Gross said. "We didn't even run those four together at Howard Wood so it was nice to see what they could do and possibly give us another relay to have a chance to do some things with."
The same foursome also took third in the 800-meter relay in a time of 1:33.1 and Justin Greenway took third in the 400-meter run in a time of 50.8.
In girls' action, Olivia Willis was third in the high jump with a leap of 4-feet-10. Dana Miszaicek took third in the long jump after a mark of 15-4.
The Kernels will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Aberdeen.
"That will be kind of interesting to get one last look at Watertown and Aberdeen," Gross said. "It will be good just to see where we're at going into the conference meet. We'll use it as one last check point to see how we match up with them in a couple of the sprint events."
Full results for the First Dakota Relays were not available at press time.
