PIERRE, S.D. — Eight more South Dakotans have died from COVID-19, according to state health officials.

The deaths were reported by the South Dakota Department of Health on Wednesday, Sept. 16, bringing the state's total COVID-19 death toll to 192.

Two people in their 40s, one person in their 70s and five people in the 80 and over age range died from COVID-19, according to the health department. The deaths were reported in Brookings County, Clay County, Hughes County, Lake County, Minnehaha County, Pennington County and Yankton County.

Active cases in the state increased to 2,442, up 56 from Tuesday.

The state’s total positive case count increased by 297 to 17,291 on Wednesday. Of those cases, 14,657 have recovered.

There are currently 139 South Dakota residents hospitalized for COVID-19 as of Wednesday.
