PIERRE, S.D. — Brookings County law enforcement agents are investigating what they're calling a hunting accident in rural White, S.D., after a 29-year-old son shot his father with an arrow while bow hunting for turkey.

According to a news release, Sioux Falls resident Mark Steinborn, 62, was killed on Friday, April 16 just before 9 a.m. after being accidentally shot with an arrow fired by his son, Gabriel, also of Sioux Falls.

The father-and-son duo hunted in a field just west of the Minnesota border. First responders performed life-saving measures, according to Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring, but the care was unsuccessful.

The release also says the sheriff's office, ambulance teams from Brookings and White, as well as the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks responded to the incident southwest of White.

According to an online obituary, Steinborn was an avid sportsman and worked for Avera Health as a nurse anesthetist.
