WOODBURY, Minn. — A 17-year-old East Ridge High School student died in a car accident Saturday, March 13, according to Woodbury police.
Garrett Bumgarner died in the crash, while four other students in the vehicle — Connor Bro, Jack Mears, Andrew McKevitt and an unidentified boy — were injured. All of the boys were 17 and attending East Ridge High School.
At 11 p.m. Saturday, a 2015 Honda Accord veered off of Settlers Ridge Parkway at Sundance Lane in Woodbury. The car hit a tree, and the force of the impact split the car in two.
Bumgarner was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
The unidentified boy was the driver of the car. He was taken to Woodwinds Hospital, and his condition is not known. Three others in the car were taken to Regions Hospital, where they remain in serious but stable condition.
Police did not release other details Monday, March 15, including the name or condition of the driver.
Classmates of the boys and school officials were stunned by the crash, and an impromptu memorial area sprung up at the site of the accident, with flowers and signs.
The South Washington County School District is providing grief support services to students.
“Our crisis team will be providing both virtual and in-building support all week. Students will be able to meet with social workers, counselors or psychologists to talk about this upsetting news,” said district spokesman Pepe Barton.
