DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — A 54-year-old Maryland man was found dead Sunday afternoon, Dec. 20, a few miles east of Devils Lake, N.D., apparently after falling from a moving Amtrak passenger train that morning.
The train likely was moving at track speed, about 80 mph, when the incident occurred at 6:15 a.m., said Ramsey County (N.D.) Sheriff Steve Nelson. The train was about 5 miles east of Devils Lake when the accident occurred. The destination of the man’s ticket was Minot, N.D.
Sheriff's Office staff found the victim at 3 p.m. Sunday The law enforcement agency had difficulty finding the man because the area where he fell from the train was filled with cattails and tall grass, Nelson said.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident, including interviewing Amtrak passengers, and doesn't yet know how the incident occurred, Nelson said.
Identification of the victim won’t be released until notification of relatives is completed, he said
