Award-winning author and Duluth native Marty Essen will present a multi-media show, "Around the World in 90 Minutes," at UMD on Oct. 22.

He'll present his show at 7 p.m. in the Rafters at UMD. It's free and open to the public.

According to Essen, his show is now the second most popular slideshow of all time, behind Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth."

Essen's show features interesting facts, humorous stories, and the best of thousands of photos he took while traveling the world for his book "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents."

"It's the type of show where the audience is having fun laughing at the stories, oohing and aahing at the photos," said Essen, "and then, when it's all done, they realize just how much they've learned."

"Around the World" began as a show Essen presented in bookstores as part of his first book tour. Now, he takes the show to colleges across the United States.

"I'm really excited about returning to my hometown" said Essen, who attended UMD before he moved to Minneapolis in the early 1980s.

Essen is a 1980 graduate of Duluth East High School. He now lives in Montana. You may have heard Essen on the radio -- in the late 1970s and the 80s he was a disc jockey for KQDS radio.
