The House unanimously voted to set June 13 of this year as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.
Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, told about her husband returning from the Vietnam war, being warned not to wear his uniform out of fear of his safety. After all of these years, she said, it is appropriate that Vietnam veterans be honored.
The United States was "a country difficult to come back to," added another Vietnam veteran, Rep. Doug Magnus, R-Slayton. "We have been living with this on our minds for all these years."
Also, the House passed a bill designating March 25 of each year as Medal of Honor Day.
Among those singled out during debate was Mike Colalillo of West Duluth, a Hibbing native who is one of the few remaining World War II Medal of Honor winners. He was honored for leading troops, as a private, into a battle with German troops and carrying a wounded troops to safety.
