Crow Wing County's unemployment rate was down, dropping from 6.9 percent in April to 6.3 percent in May. The bad news is that in May 1990 the rate was only 5.3 percent. 

 

30 years ago (1981)

A Brainerd man who once worked as a licensed securities agent was arraigned in court here for bilking investors in a fictitious company out of thousands of dollars. He offered a 16.5 percent return for investments in what is alleged to be a “Ponzi” scheme.

 

40 years ago (1971)

The Brainerd City Council and Northwest Paper Co. have entered into a tentative agreement for construction of a $6 million sewage disposal plant. Under the plan the City of Brainerd will first seek a federal grant to cover 75 percent of its share of the cost.

 

60 years ago (1951)

A letter that “survived” the airplane crash last week near Denver that claimed many lives was delivered in Brainerd today. A birthday letter to Roger Nutting from his grandfather in San Francisco arrived splattered with oil and missing the stamp, but was legible.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Brainerd will become the air center of the state this weekend when Belle Fourche Airlines presents an air carnival at Rosko Airport under auspices of the American Legion. 

 

100 years ago (1911)

Chief of Police George Ridley has been notified by Chief of Police Wheaton, of Staples, that M. Batcher's store was burglarized on July 3. Knives, razors, watches and revolvers were stolen. Brainerd police will be on the lookout for suspicious looking characters.
